Blasting for the drainage tunnel began in Brienz GR on Monday. A 2.3-kilometre-long drainage system is intended to protect the mountain village, which stands on unstable ground, from further landslides and falling rocks.

"The village should still be alive in 100 years' time," said the mayor Daniel Albertin after the first blast, according to a statement from the municipality of Albula. It marked the start of construction of the approximately five-metre-high tunnel.

This is intended to drain the subsoil of the village and thus stop the landslide of the land mass on which Brienz stands and prevent further landslides. The project is expected to be completed in summer 2027. Most of the costs of around CHF 40 million will be shared by the federal government and the canton of Graubünden.

On the night of June 16, 2023, 1.2 million cubic meters of rock plunged into the depths above Brienz as a huge stream of debris. This stopped shortly before the previously evacuated village and left it undamaged.
