Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) has ordered temporary border controls at the Franco-German border in order to ensure greater security before and during the Olympic Games in Paris together with the French authorities. These controls will be notified to the EU Commission shortly, as the ministry announced. The Games begin on July 26 and end on August 11.
From July 19, however, the controls at the borders with Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg that were introduced during the European Football Championships will be discontinued. Here, there will be a switch back to a dragnet with targeted checks, as was reported. At the land borders with Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Poland, however, border controls will continue to take place in order to limit irregular migration and combat people smuggling, according to Faeser.
Faeser was critical of demands from the CDU/CSU and FDP to maintain stricter controls at the borders with neighboring countries such as the Netherlands and Denmark even after the European Championships. Anyone wanting to do this would also have to justify the serious consequences for commuters, travelers, trade and the economy - and be able to justify how this would be in line with European law. These European legal requirements presuppose a serious threat to public order or internal security and only allow internal border controls for a limited period and as a last resort.
