Campaign for change of canton concordat for Moutier launched

The campaign for the vote on the concordat to transfer Moutier from Bern to the Jura has begun. On Thursday, a committee of seven of the eight parties in the municipal parliament called on the residents of the small town and the two cantonal populations to vote Yes on September 22.
The non-partisan committee wants to run a sober and objective campaign, as it explained to the media in Moutier on Thursday evening. It wants to focus on arguments free of identitarian and emotional aspects. The concordat regulates the most important points for the transfer to the canton of Jura in a sensible way.
The campaign will be pragmatic and modest, the committee assured. Moutier wants to look to the future and no longer worry about the divisions of the past. It was a formal and technical vote.
According to the pro-committee, the concordat is balanced and does not disadvantage anyone. There is no reason to reject it. It is time to turn over a new leaf. A no vote at the ballot box would not be a win for anyone.
The seven autonomist-oriented parties recalled that the concordat is the result of a long democratic process and delicate negotiations between Bern and the Jura. Calling the agreement into question would affect the future of Moutier and lead to a period of uncertainty and political deadlock.
The "Moutier à venir" movement is the only group in the municipal parliament to oppose the concordat. It includes 10 of the 41 members of the legislature. As the only anti-separatist force in the municipal parliament, this group is calling for the concordat to be rejected. It cites financial policy reasons for this.
Next week, the cantonal governments of Jura and Bern will vote in favor of the concordat. It is assumed that the electorate of both cantons will approve the proposal. This will allow the 7400 inhabitants of Moutier to join the canton of Jura on January 1, 2026, as they wish.
