The canton of Basel-Stadt will close the 2023 financial year with a surplus of CHF 434 million. This is 421 million more than budgeted, which was mainly due to exceptionally high income from corporate taxes, as Finance Director Tanja Soland (SP) announced on Thursday.
At the media conference, Soland spoke of "another very pleasing year-end result". A surplus of just 13 million was set in the budget.
In total, the canton took in 5 billion francs last year and spent around 4.56 billion francs. Despite high investments amounting to CHF 421 million, the surplus led to a self-financing ratio of 160 percent.
The fact that the surplus was more than 33 times higher than forecast was mainly due to the fact that income from corporate taxes was massively higher than expected - a figure that is difficult to predict, as Soland said. Here, the canton took in 351 million francs more than had been budgeted.
Less social welfare expenditure
On the other hand, the canton spent less than budgeted. There was a noticeable reduction of CHF 36 million in social welfare expenditure and CHF 14 million in premium reductions.
A surplus of CHF 52 million has been budgeted for the current year despite the tax reduction package that has been adopted, which will result in a CHF 110 million reduction in revenue. However, Soland has already indicated that this amount is likely to increase.
