The canton of Fribourg is expecting to be in the red in the coming years. By 2028, the expenditure surplus is likely to total around 630 million francs. The State Council now wants to take countermeasures with a restructuring program.
In order to get finances back on track in the long term, the State Council has commissioned working groups to draw up possible measures. All options are to be examined without taboos, as detailed in a press release issued by the State Council on Wednesday.
The renovation program is due to go out for consultation in the course of next spring. The Grand Council is then expected to decide on it in the fall of 2025.
The cantonal budget for the coming year still anticipates a small surplus of CHF 650,400. After that, the situation will deteriorate rapidly, as State Council President and Finance Director Jean-Pierre Siggen emphasized.
The projected budgets for 2026, 2027 and 2028 show deficits of 197.5 million, 221.8 million and 210.7 million respectively. According to the State Council, these figures deviate significantly from the principle of a balanced budget.
What is needed now are "effective and decisive measures from both the State Council and the Grand Council to ensure that the canton's finances do not get out of hand and that the challenges of the coming years can be overcome", the press release continues.
