All 13 school centers in the canton of Neuchâtel have introduced immersion teaching in a foreign language. According to the head of the department responsible for primary school education, German immersion lessons have increased by around 30 percent of pupils.
The lessons will take place as part of various courses or in the form of a German immersion year, as Jean-Claude Marguet, Head of the Office for Primary Education, said at a press conference on Thursday.
"This immersion teaching has now become an exemplary part of Neuchâtel schools. It involves around 3416 pupils in compulsory education, which corresponds to 18 percent," explained Crystel Graf, the State Councillor responsible for education.
The education authority also announced that seventh to eleventh grades are gradually being equipped with wifi antennas specially developed for schools. A device would enable teaching staff to operate the antenna by remote control in order to limit radiation and energy consumption.
