After five years of surpluses, the canton of Solothurn has slipped into the red. The 2023 state accounts show a deficit of 58.3 million francs. According to the cantonal government, financial planning for the coming years remains difficult. A savings program is in the works.

The deficit was CHF 32.2 million lower than budgeted, as Finance Director Peter Hodel (FDP) announced to the media in Solothurn on Thursday.

The better result was due in particular to the CHF 27.2 million increase in tax revenue. The "conscientious budget discipline" also cushioned the deficit.

According to the cantonal government, the higher net debt of CHF 846 million is due to the funding of the shortfall in the pension fund of the Canton of Solothurn. The net debt per inhabitant amounts to CHF 3460.

Cost-cutting program against red figures

The financial scope for action remains intact thanks to provisions from previous years, stated Finance Director Hodel. The budget for the current year anticipates a deficit of CHF 112 million.

The Government Council has already commissioned a savings program for the years 2025 to 2028. It involves 60 million francs. The government council asked the departments to draw up savings proposals.

A reduction and elimination of services as well as the adaptation of laws are being examined, it was said. The savings plan is to be presented to parliament at the end of the year.
