Cardinal Emil Paul Tscherrig from Valais is a new member of the top management of the Vatican Bank. Pope Francis has appointed him to the Supervisory Commission of the financial institution.
As a member of the Cardinals' Supervisory Commission, former Vatican diplomat Emil Paul Tscherrig is now part of the six-member top management of the Vatican Bank IOR, as the online portal kath.ch writes. This supervisory body is appointed directly by the Pope.
The 77-year-old Tscherrig was appointed cardinal in 2023. He is also a member of the Apostolic Signature, the highest Vatican court. He is also a member of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, the Dicastery for Bishops and the Section for the First Evangelization and the New Particular Churches in the Dicastery for Evangelization.
The Supervisory Commission of the IOOC is the highest body of the pontifical financial institution. It appoints the five-member Supervisory Board and, on the recommendation of the Supervisory Board, also the Director General and the Deputy Director General.
The new President of the Cardinal Commission of the Vatican Bank is Cardinal Christoph Schönborn from Vienna. Schönborn took over the presidency of the committee from Cardinal Santos Abril y Castello, who held this office for ten years.
