On 1 August in his home canton of Ticino, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis emphasized its contribution to Switzerland. He also appealed to the will to be part of the community and to participate in democracy.
"I would like to invite you to be actors," said the Foreign Minister on Thursday in Sessa, part of the municipality of Tresa near Lugano. "Our democracy allows us to do this. And it is an incredible asset. We can all do something. We can continue to want Switzerland," emphasized Cassis, referring to the German term "Willensnation".
Citizenship, listening to each other, the art of compromise - this is what counts. "If there is a common will, we are capable of great things. That's what our history teaches us," said the Ticino native.
What is at stake is freedom, which is never acquired once and for all. The right to freedom only exists in conjunction with the duty of responsibility, the responsibility to contribute to the common good, said Cassis.
The man from Ticino did not forget to point out that his canton is once again represented in the national government in Bern. "After 18 long years of absence, Switzerland, which thinks, speaks, writes and dreams in Italian, is back in the Federal Council," he said.
And what's more: Switzerland doesn't just speak, think and write, it also dreams. Because reason alone is not enough, reason is dry. It only shines when it is enriched with the scent of dreams, feelings, humor and love. "All of this is the Italian-speaking soul of Switzerland," said Cassis.
