Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis spoke at the Council of Europe on Friday in support of Alain Berset's candidacy for the post of Secretary General. His former Federal Councillor colleague is the "ideal candidate".

Mr. Cassis said at the 133rd session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg that Switzerland wanted to use Mr. Berset's candidacy to help strengthen a fair, influential Europe capable of securing peace and democracy on the continent and in the world. He was certain that Berset was the ideal candidate to lead the Council of Europe on its new dynamic path.

Switzerland fully supports the strategy adopted at the ministerial meeting in Reykjavik a year ago. Among other things, this includes the establishment of a damage register for the destruction caused by the war in Ukraine. Because without justice, there will be no peace, said Cassis.

Supporting Ukraine must be a priority for the Council of Europe, just as it is for Switzerland. This is why the Confederation is also organizing the Ukraine Peace Conference on the Bürgenstock NW in June. It is a necessary first step towards a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
