Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has condemned the shots fired at Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico as "intolerable". "I wish him a good recovery from this cowardly attack," said Scholz on Wednesday after a meeting with Swiss President Viola Amherd in Berlin. He had previously condemned the attack on the online platform X. "In these hours, my thoughts are with Robert Fico, his family and the citizens of Slovakia."
Fico was shot after a cabinet meeting in the town of Handlova and taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The attacker was reportedly arrested.
When asked about the possible consequences of the attack in Slovakia and the series of attacks on election campaigners in Germany, Scholz declined to comment. "There must be no violence," he emphasized, however. "Democracy is characterized by the non-violent resolution of differences of opinion - and that must remain the case."
