The Swiss National Council elections on Sunday revealed a divide between urban and rural areas. The SVP emerged as the strongest party in 15 cantons, but only achieved a majority in three canton capitals: Frauenfeld, Herisau and Zug. The majority of the other canton capitals voted for the SP, including Aarau, Bern, Chur, Freiburg, Liestal, Schaffhausen, Solothurn, St. Gallen and Zurich. The SVP also achieved a majority in the cantons of Schwyz and Glarus, but the main town of Sarnen voted for the FDP. In the canton of Obwalden, the SVP also achieved a majority, but the main town of Sarnen voted for the FDP. In the canton of Ticino, both the canton and the capital of Bellinzona voted for the FDP. The SP achieved a majority in the cantons of Nidwalden, Wallis, Uri and Appenzell Innerrhoden, including their capitals. The Mitte-Nationalratskandidat in Appenzell Innerrhoden ran unopposed. The canton of Lucerne also voted for the Mitte, but the city of Lucerne voted for the SP. The SP also achieved a majority in the cantons of Basel, Geneva, Lausanne, Neuchâtel and Delémont. In total, 15 of the 26 canton capitals voted for the SP, while the bürgerliche Lager held 16 cantons, 15 for the SVP and one for the FDP. The Mitte achieved a majority in five cantons.
