In the current year, healthcare expenditure in Switzerland is expected to grow by 4.1 percent. The comparison service Comparis criticizes the fact that premiums have recently risen faster than healthcare costs.

The figures from the KOF Swiss Economic Institute show that the premium increase in the last two years was far higher than the rise in healthcare costs, Comparis reported on Tuesday.

Health insurance expert Felix Schneuwly does not blame the health insurers for the increase. He says that competition is working for them. Rather, there has been a "bureaucratic and regulatory explosion" at the federal level, which is said to have triggered the premium shock.

Additional costs for prevention and administration

The KOF expects growth of 3.6 percent in 2024 and 3.2 percent in 2025, according to the forecast published on Tuesday. Last year, the research institute was still forecasting 0.5 percent lower growth for the coming years.

According to the KOF, the areas of prevention, administration and rehabilitation will see particularly strong increases. The study predicts below-average cost increases in long-term care and support services.

11.5 percent of gross domestic product

The KOF expects healthcare expenditure to amount to CHF 92 billion this year, rising to CHF 95.3 billion in 2024 and CHF 98.4 billion in 2025. In 2022, it was still CHF 88.4 billion.

Measured against gross domestic product, expenditure on healthcare is likely to average around 11.5% between 2022 and 2025. In the previous ten years, it was 10.9 percent, and less than 10 percent from 2002 to 2011.

The study on healthcare costs is compiled by KOF with a research contribution from the Comparis comparison service.
