Complaints about vote on Valais constitution withdrawn

The two complaints submitted during the referendum campaign on the new Valais Constitution have been withdrawn. The reason for this is that the population rejected the draft of the new constitution at the ballot box on Sunday.
One complaint had already been withdrawn after the result of the vote was announced on Sunday. The second was recalled on Tuesday. "A letter with this content was sent to the Judicial Commission of the Grand Council today," Frédéric Pitteloud, lawyer for the four complainants, confirmed to the Keystone-SDA news agency on Tuesday. "The results are very clear and the chances of success of an appeal are therefore low."
The complaint criticized the involvement of Upper Valais State Councillors Roberto Schmidt (center) and Franz Ruppen (SVP) in the referendum campaign. Both had campaigned against the new constitution, although the State Council had promised that it would not interfere with the bill.
By withdrawing their complaint, the four complainants are refraining from placing it on the agenda of the Grand Council. The withdrawal also means that the Constitutional Council can be dissolved as planned on March 25.
The second complaint had been submitted to the State Council and the Grand Council by the Upper Valais Constitutional Councillor Gerhard Schmid. In view of the very clear result of the vote, Schmidt declared immediately after the ballot that he would withdraw the complaint as there was "no point in maintaining it". His complaint was directed against the way in which the votes cast were counted.
The people of Valais rejected the new cantonal constitution by a clear majority on Sunday. The draft of the new constitution, which included the right to vote and stand for election for foreigners with a C permit, was rejected with 68.1% of votes against, while the draft without this option was rejected with 57% against.
