In a dispute over a site, a group of travelers and the canton of Vaud were able to reach an agreement on Friday after all. The travellers, who had settled near Lausanne on Thursday with around 40 caravans, agreed to leave for Yverdon.

The convoy broke off the camp at the Chalet-à-Gobet site at around 3.30 p.m. after "long hours of palaver", the new cantonal delegate for relations with travelers, Laurent Curchod, told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Friday evening.

The city of Yverdon is making a plot of land near the Y-Park available to the travelers for four weeks. "This is a temporary solution," emphasized Curchod.

Previously, the conflict between the canton and this group of travellers had come to a head. The travellers refused to leave the occupied site.

The situation for the other convoy, which arrived in Lausanne on Thursday, has also been resolved for a few weeks. The 25 caravans were set up in Montheron, north of Lausanne, in the parking lot of the La Rama fire department training center.

According to the city of Lausanne, the caravans are allowed to use the area for three months without renewal. All users of the parking lot must pay a fee of 30 francs per caravan per day. In addition, the authorities collect a fee of 100 francs per caravan to cover any costs for the maintenance of the site.

Escorted by police

On Thursday, two caravan convoys tried to enter Lausanne, one from the north and one from the south. They were blocked by the police and then escorted to the outskirts of the city.

The exact destination of the travelers was not known. However, it was likely that they were trying to return to the Bourdonnette parking lot, where around 120 caravans had been parked between February and September 2023, according to the authorities.

As the official reception area in Rennaz is already fully booked with around 40 pitches, the canton of Vaud is expecting an uncontrolled influx of travellers, as it did last year.
