It should be easier to convert road vehicles with combustion engines into electrically powered vehicles. Following the National Council, the Council of States has also adopted a motion calling on the Federal Council to reduce the hurdles for conversion.
The small chamber approved the motion by Ticino SP National Councillor Bruno Storni on Wednesday by 36 votes to 2 with one abstention. It will therefore be passed on to the national government for implementation.
In his proposal, Storni wrote that overly strict regulations and ordinances make the conversion of road vehicles practically impossible from an economic point of view. The conversion of vehicles in operation is an opportunity that should be seized.
Stefan Engler (center/GR), spokesman for the preliminary consultation committee, said that many customers would like to see vehicles converted in this way. According to studies, the conversion of cars with combustion engines is more environmentally friendly than a new electric car.
The Council of States did not follow the Federal Council, which had requested rejection. Environment Minister Albert Rösti said in the Council of States that it was already possible to issue a "conversion type approval" for series conversions from combustion engines to electric motors. A conversion permit is therefore available for a series of vehicles.
In Switzerland, easing has already been decided. However, the Federal Council sees no scope for further easing, as security must remain guaranteed.
