The Council of Europe has elected Swiss national Alain Chablais as a judge at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg. However, Chablais was not elected to the post for Switzerland, but for Liechtenstein. He currently works as a representative of the Swiss government on the ECHR Steering Committee.

The 54-year-old lawyer will take up his nine-year term as a judge in September, as the Council of Europe announced on Thursday. The Swiss-French dual national previously worked as a judge at the Federal Administrative Court, among other positions.

The member states of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) are each represented by one judge at the ECtHR. Andreas Zünd has been a judge for Switzerland since 2021.
