The responsible Council of States committee has almost quadrupled the contribution requested by the Federal Council for the European Women's Football Championships in Switzerland. Instead of the four million proposed by the Federal Council, it has unanimously requested CHF 15 million.
The Council of States Committee for Science, Education and Culture (WBK-S) is delighted about the 2025 European Women's Football Championships in eight Swiss cities, as reported by the parliamentary services on Friday. The European Football Championships are the largest sporting event exclusively for women and would give the sport a boost.
The WBK-S intends for the increased contribution to flow into national communication, the financing of combined public transport tickets, sustainable mobility and the promotion of tourism. The relevant federal offices are to offset at least 20 percent of the contribution.
With this decision, the committee accepted a motion by Councillor of States Flavia Wasserfallen (SP/BE). The Swiss Football Association had criticized that the four million francs requested by the Federal Council were not enough to make the 2025 summer an event with international appeal and a lasting impact for Swiss girls' and women's football.
The European Championships will take place from July 2 to 27, 2025 in the cities of Basel, Bern, Geneva, Zurich, Lucerne, Sion, St. Gallen and Thun. In addition to the federal government, the host cities and cantons are supporting the major event. Individual service providers also make contributions. The last major international football event in Switzerland was Euro 2008.
