In future, the cantons should be able to authorize up to twelve Sunday sales instead of the current maximum of four. The responsible Council of States committee supports a corresponding request from the canton of Zurich.
The Economic Affairs Committee of the Council of States (WAK-S) voted 10 to 2 in favor of a parliamentary initiative, as reported by the parliamentary services on Tuesday. The National Council's sister committee will decide on this next.
This proposal, which the Commission considers to be moderate, would provide retailers with a tool to better compete with online retailers, according to the press release. The initiative also takes account of the population's changing shopping needs.
However, the WAK-S says no to a further flexibilization of Sunday sales, as demanded by the National Council. This would allow small grocery stores to open on Sundays.
