The Council of States criticizes the climate ruling of the European Court of Human Rights. It therefore does not want any additional measures for climate protection, as the requirements have been met. The small chamber adopted a corresponding declaration on Wednesday.

The main argument of the declaration is that the court must respect democratic decision-making processes. The Council of States approved it by 31 votes to 11 with two abstentions. The National Council will also vote on the same text in a week's time.

At the beginning of April, following a complaint by the Climate Seniors Association, the Court found that Switzerland had violated the Convention on Human Rights. It had failed to fulfill its duties with regard to climate protection. The state must protect individuals from the consequences of climate change for life and health.

The small chamber made its decision against the will of a left-wing minority of its Legal Affairs Committee - consisting of Carlo Sommaruga (SP/GE), Mathilde Crevoisier Crelier (SP/JU) and Céline Vara (Greens/NE).
