Council of States wants to spend more money on climate measures in forests

The Council of States wants to continue three additional measures to adapt Swiss forests to climate change beyond 2024. It also wants to use more federal funds for this. On Tuesday, it adopted a motion by Daniel Fässler, a member of the Council of States from Innerrhoden.
The small chamber reached its decision by 31 votes to 4 with three abstentions. The proposal will now go to the National Council.
In particular, Fässler is calling for the federal contributions for the "Protection Forest", "Forest Biodiversity" and "Forest Management" sub-programs to be increased by a total of CHF 25 million per year between 2025 and 2028. The national government should then present a definitive solution.
The Federal Council opposed the motion. It is true that the adaptation of forests to climate change must be driven forward quickly. However, the federal government lacks the financial leeway.
