The Winterthur District Court began questioning a 79-year-old man accused of murder on Tuesday as planned. The court rejected a request by the defense to stop the hearing for the time being and obtain new expert opinions.

Despite the suspicion expressed several times, it was never properly clarified whether his client was suffering from dementia, the defense lawyer stated. First of all, it had to be examined whether he was fit to stand trial in view of his existing cognitive limitations.

The district court deemed the existing expert reports to be sufficient. The court intends to take into account the state of health of the defendant, who was led into the courtroom in a wheelchair, with hourly breaks.

The Serbian is alleged to have killed his grandson's wife in Winterthur in February 2021. The public prosecutor assumes a "blatantly selfish" motive; the grandfather saw his values and family honor violated because the woman had traveled to Switzerland and wanted a divorce.
