Hundreds of people participated in an "Antifascist Evening Walk" in Bern on Saturday. The demonstration was not authorized, and according to the Bern Cantonal Police, there were attacks on the forces and numerous property damages.
The police protected various buildings, including the city theater, and accompanied the procession with a large deployment. However, they initially allowed the demonstrators to proceed, as a reporter for the news agency Keystone-SDA reported.
Many demonstrators at the demonstration were masked. Fireworks and firecrackers were set off. Along the route, there were sprayings and property damage. In Breitenrain, the windows of a bank branch were smashed, among other things. The cantonal police temporarily blocked traffic between Wankdorf and Bubenbergplatz.
Groups from Basel and Zurich called for participation in the parade, including Basel Nazifrei. With the "evening walk", they wanted to reaffirm their resistance to the state, capital and fascism, as stated in calls on the internet.
In the past, there have been instances of violence, property damage, and skirmishes with police during anti-fascist marches in Bern. Last year, over a thousand people participated in the march.
