The Swiss Army is replacing the iodine tablets in all households, businesses and public institutions within a 50 kilometer radius of the Swiss nuclear power plants Beznau I/II AG, Gösgen SO and Leibstadt AG from the coming weeks until April 2024. The nuclear power plant operators will cover part of the costs, which amount to 34 million Swiss francs. 11 million of this will be paid by the nuclear power plant operators, who will pay 1.22 million francs into the general federal budget annually between 2021 and 2029. The households, businesses and public institutions within the 50 kilometer radius no longer belong to the obligatory distribution area for private individuals. The cantons are responsible for the appropriate storage of potassium iodide tablets outside the 50 kilometer radius in order to supply the entire population in case of an emergency. The tablets may only be taken on the orders of the authorities, in particular the National Alarm Centre (NAZ). They can be stored for a maximum of ten years and must then be replaced. Iodine tablets prevent radioactive iodine from entering the thyroid gland and developing thyroid cancer. Their intake is only intended in the event of a serious nuclear power plant accident with the release of radioactivity.
