An accident almost occurred on Saturday during work on the planned salvage of the steamship Säntis from the bottom of Lake Constance. A diver became entangled underwater in a mooring rope and had to be rescued.
The incident occurred while trying to untangle a knot in the cable of a diving robot just 1.5 meters below the surface, the ship salvage association wrote in a statement on Monday.
The man became entangled in mountain ropes and was unable to free himself, the president of the association, Silvan Paganini, told the German Press Agency. The ropes could have been cut in the end.
The association now wants to expand the diving team to include more experienced divers, for example from the army, police or oil platform sector. Because everyone takes part in the operation voluntarily, many are not always available alongside their actual jobs. The salvage operation had already been postponed once in mid-April due to technical problems.
Despite another setback, the association hopes to be able to salvage the ship and bring it to the surface by June at the latest.
Deliberately sunk in 1933
The wreck has been lying at a depth of 210 meters for 91 years. The "Säntis" was deliberately sunk in 1933. Scrapping it was rejected as too expensive at the time. The 49-metre-long ship had been sailing on Lake Constance since 1892 and could carry 400 passengers.
The former owner of the steamship, Schweizerische Bodensee-Schifffahrt AG, sold the wreck to the ship salvage association for a symbolic franc.
