Dozens of Swiss municipalities switch off lights for “Earth Hour”

Lights out for climate protection: As part of the global "Earth Hour" campaign, various Swiss municipalities and companies switched off their lights for an hour on Saturday evening. They wanted to set an example for climate protection.
In Switzerland, more than 25 municipalities took part, according to the nature conservation organization WWF Switzerland. These included the cities of Basel, Bern, Geneva, St. Gallen, Schaffhausen, Fribourg, Delsberg and Locarno TI. Landmarks in these towns were in the dark between 8.30 pm and 9.30 pm.
Companies and individuals also took part in the campaign. At Paradeplatz in Zurich, for example, the lights of the major bank UBS were switched off for an hour.
The "Earth Hour" is an impressive sign of solidarity, according to WWF Switzerland. Average air and ocean temperatures in 2023 were higher than ever before. Effective measures to reduce environmental pollution include, for example, switching to public transport, traveling closer to home instead of further afield, switching from oil heating to heat pumps or eating less meat.
Earth Hour was launched by WWF Australia in 2007. According to WWF, it is the largest global climate and environmental protection campaign in which millions of people around the world take part.
