EU Commission reacts cautiously to climate ruling

The Commission of the European Union (EU) has reacted cautiously to the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg on climate issues. The Commission will carefully study both the ruling against Switzerland and the two rejected complaints, said an EU Commission spokesperson in Brussels on Tuesday at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency.
Irrespective of the legal arguments, the cases are a reminder of the importance that citizens attach to climate protection, the spokesperson continued. With its climate law, the EU is on the way to achieving the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.
While all 27 EU member states have signed the European Convention on Human Rights, the EU has not yet ratified the text. However, talks are being held in this context. These are "at an advanced stage", according to Commission circles. It remains to be seen when accession can be expected.
