The competition for medals in Bosseln and Klootschiessen has begun: On Thursday, the 17th European Championships kicked off in Neuharlingersiel in East Frisia (Wittmund district) with a parade in glorious sunshine. Around 400 athletes and coaches from Europe are creating an international flair on the coast. Competitions with individual and team competitions are scheduled until Sunday.

"We have perfect conditions, with 3,000 people taking part in the parade," said Holger Wilken, spokesman for the Frisian Klootschiesserverband, which organizes the European Championships every four years. It was a great atmosphere and many visitors had brought national flags with them. "A number of Father's Day groups have moved their trip to Neuharlingersiel to be there for the parade," said Wilken. Thousands of spectators watched the parade on Ascension Day. The opening was planned for later in the afternoon.

In addition to throwers from East Frisia and Schleswig-Holstein, teams from the Netherlands, Italy and Ireland traveled to the event. Other teams from Spain and Switzerland followed the European Championships as guests to find out about the organization. According to Wilken, this is the first time that all athletes have been accommodated in one facility and the atmosphere is very good.

Bossel is a team sport in which a ball is thrown over a set distance with as few throws as possible. The athletes try to keep the ball on the road for as long as possible using their strength and skill. When klootschiessen is played on the meadow, everyone throws on their own.

Numerous fans, family members and vacationers are expected to follow the competition. The organizers are expecting at least 10,000 spectators per day. The previous European Championships were held in Meldorf in the Dithmarschen district on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein in 2022 - after being postponed in 2020 due to the coronavirus.
