Evacuations in Upper Valais due to Forest Fire in Full Swing

On Monday evening, the evacuation of several villages in the Oberwallis region due to a forest fire was underway. The population of Oberried had been completely evacuated by 10pm, while the evacuation of Bitsch-Mörel was still ongoing. Other settlements below the large fire area at Bitsch/Ried-Mörel were partially evacuated due to the risk of rockfall. In addition to the helicopters from Air Zermatt and Air Glaciers, an army helicopter was also available. During the night, two-engine helicopters from Air Zermatt and Air Glaciers continued to carry out firefighting flights. The exact cause and extent of the fire were still unknown at the end of the evening. The fire was visible from far away.
