Exhibition places controversial Bernese mural in context

The Historisches Museum Bern is placing a mural at the center of the exhibition "Widerstände. Dealing with racism in Bern". It made headlines in a school in Bern during the "Black Lives Matter" debate because of its stereotypical depiction of people.
As part of this debate, the painting was removed and donated to the Historisches Museum Bern. Now, in the exhibition on racism and colonialism, it is intended to encourage a critical examination of history and current events.
Visitors are invited to question existing images of history "and help shape future narratives", as the museum writes in a press release on Wednesday. The exhibition will run until June 1, 2025.
The mural, an ABC, was created at the end of the 1940s by the artists Eugen Jordi and Emil Zbinden for a wall in the Wylergut school building in Bern. The sgraffito (scratching technique) shows letters as well as animals, plants and objects and stereotypical depictions of people from Africa, Asia and America.
