At the Rail Congress in Basel, representatives of the governments of the border cantons of Basel-Stadt and Geneva pointed out congestion in the expansion of the rail infrastructure. Many wishes and needs will be incorporated into the 2026 rail expansion message.
The heart of the suburban and long-distance rail network in Basel and many expansion steps in cross-border and domestic rail transport in Geneva: huge expansion projects are in the pipeline in the two rail hubs of Basel and Geneva, as Geneva cantonal councillor Pierre Maudet (non-party) and his Basel colleague Esther Keller (GLP) emphasized in Basel on Thursday.
Many expensive requests will be included in the federal government's 2026 rail expansion dispatch. These include the need for the SBB underground station - and other projects that are still at the preliminary study stage.
In this context, Maudet brought up the idea and strategy that the cantons and regions could and should take the lead in rail expansion - something that the canton of Geneva is already practicing.
