After the fire in the village center of Elgg ZH, the actual extinguishing operation was completed on Saturday afternoon. Only a few firefighters were still on site for the fire watch and clean-up work. A "few dozen" residents were able to return to their homes.

The municipality has organized emergency accommodation for those people whose properties were severely affected by the fire, said Zurich cantonal police spokesman Florian Frei in response to an inquiry from the Keystone-SDA news agency. Five to six houses were affected by the fire.

Other buildings were damaged by the heat or the extinguishing water. As the affected houses cannot yet be entered, the cause of the fire remains unclear. This should not be possible until the beginning of the week, said Frei.

The emergency call was received by the fire department at 00.20 a.m., as the cantonal police reported early on Saturday morning. A house in the village center was fully engulfed in flames when the emergency services arrived and the fire had spread to the neighboring buildings. No one was injured.
