In a parade through the old town of Solothurn on Friday evening, farmers drew attention to the challenges facing their profession. With cowbells and pianos, they wanted to "put a smile on the faces of the spectators", as they announced.

According to estimates by the organizing group "Landwirtschaft verzaubert", around 200 people took part in the procession through the town, many dressed in Edelweiss shirts or traditional costumes. Organizer Markus Dietschi described the rally as a "happy event". Many families took part.

More people had taken part than had registered. The background noise was reminiscent of an alpine parade and several passers-by applauded spontaneously. Dietschi described the atmosphere as peaceful throughout.

The event was not intended to scare people away, but to draw attention to the difficult situation in agriculture, as he told the Keystone-SDA news agency on request.

The Solothurn Farmers' Association supported the campaign. It is not only farmers in the EU countries who have to fight for their livelihoods, Swiss agriculture is also facing many challenges, the "Landwirtschaft verzaubert" team announced.

They wanted to avoid demonstrations like those in other countries, which lead to confrontations and blockades, at all costs. This is how the idea of a cowbell and prank parade came about.

According to the team, there is an urgent need for action in Switzerland with regard to low producer prices. It is not acceptable to simply pass on increased costs to consumer prices while the major distributors achieve record results.
