A 23-year-old Swiss man is due to appear before Zurich District Court today (Tuesday) to answer charges of attempted grievous bodily harm. The FCZ fan is alleged to have thrown a lit distress flare into the GC fan block at the Zurich football derby in October 2021.
The riots at Letzigrund stadium after the match between GC Zurich and FC Zurich on October 23, 2021 made headlines. There was even talk of the "Disgrace of Zurich 2.0" in a "Blick" article, in reference to the serious riots during the scandalous derby in October 2011, which went down in football history as the "Disgrace of Zurich".
The match in October 2021 ended in a 3-3 draw. Immediately after the final whistle, according to the indictment, around 60 FCZ fans, including the accused, who has to appear in court today (Tuesday), disguised themselves. They briefly left the stadium and immediately afterwards entered the tartan track via another sector and stormed towards the GCZ fan sector.
There, they threw pyrotechnic objects, in particular flares, into the densely packed fan curve, where families with children were also present. The accused is said to have thrown such a flare himself.
The flares, which are difficult to extinguish, reach temperatures of over 2000 degrees Celsius when they burn and can cause severe burns. However, there were no serious injuries during the incident.
The public prosecutor is demanding a prison sentence of 22 months and a fine of CHF 300 for the alleged torch thrower. The custodial sentence is to be conditional with a probationary period of two years.
The police were able to identify a total of 18 people who were allegedly involved in the riot, as the Zurich city police announced around a year after the incident. Following the riots, the Swiss Football League's disciplinary committee ordered that FCZ's south curve be banned for two derby home games.
