The attempted assassination of former US President Donald Trump has also shocked politicians in Switzerland. FDP President Thierry Burkart described the act as "shocking".

"There must be no place for political violence in a democracy," wrote the 48-year-old member of the Council of States from the canton of Aargau on Platform X. "The perpetrator is always responsible. But it is also the responsibility of the political parties to counteract the polarization in society."

Trump, the designated Republican presidential candidate, was shot at a campaign rally in the US state of Pennsylvania on Saturday. Trump was injured in the ear. In addition to the suspected shooter, one spectator died and two others were seriously injured, according to the authorities. The assassin was killed by security officers. US President Joe Biden and other politicians around the world reacted with horror and spoke out against any form of violence in politics.
