The Federal Council has forwarded a credit of CHF 56 million for humanitarian aid in the Middle East to the foreign policy committees for consultation. It will decide later on the Swiss contribution to the UN Palestinian Relief and Works Agency (UNWRA).

By forwarding this to the commissions, the national government is following a decision made by the Federal Assembly in December. According to this decision, payments for humanitarian aid in the Middle East will be made in tranches and after consultation.

The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) is submitting the first tranche of 56.2 million to the commissions. The funds are earmarked for the occupied Palestinian territory, Israel, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.

The money is intended for organizations from Switzerland such as the Swiss Red Cross, Terre des Hommes and Caritas. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), UN organizations and international and local non-governmental organizations (Save the Children and others) are also involved.
