On Tuesday, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) condemned Switzerland for not doing enough to protect the climate. The Federal Council has not yet commented on this after its meeting on Wednesday.

The Federal Council was informed of the ruling on Wednesday, Federal Council spokesperson André Simonazzi told the media in Bern on Wednesday in response to a question from journalists. The ruling comprises 300 pages and is now being analyzed by the relevant administrative bodies. The federal government has therefore not yet commented on it.

In its ruling published on Tuesday, the ECtHR found that Switzerland had not fulfilled its duties in terms of climate protection and was therefore in breach of the Convention on Human Rights. The case was brought before the court in Strasbourg by the Climate Seniors Association.

According to Alain Chablais from the Federal Office of Justice, the federal government's representative before the ECHR, Switzerland must act on the ruling. "It is now up to the authorities to analyze the situation and outline ways forward," said Chablais in an interview with the Keystone-SDA news agency after the ruling became public.
