The Federal Council has released a further CHF 80 million from the rail expansion program. The money is to be used for upgrades on the Gotthard axis. In addition, the Lausanne-Biel-Olten SO line is to be made more efficient.
In the canton of Ticino, track upgrades are planned between Maroggia and Melano as well as new points connections in the Chiasso freight facilities, as the Federal Council announced on Friday. The aim is to ensure stable operations with long freight trains.
The Lausanne-Biel-Olten SO railroad line is to be upgraded between Solothurn and Wanzwil BE. This should allow more trains to run on the line in future. Funds have also been released for the conversion of Romont FR station. This will also increase capacity.
Due to project adjustments and inflation, the Federal Council ultimately increased the funds from earlier projects. One of these is the platform extension and the second pedestrian underpass at Fribourg station.
In 2009, the Swiss parliament approved around 80 projects worth CHF 5.4 billion for the "Future Development of Rail Infrastructure" (ZEB) program. ZEB is the successor program to "Rail 2000".
The projects are planned and implemented by the infrastructure operators. The Federal Council is responsible for financial control by means of implementation agreements. Almost 95% of the funds required for the implementation of ZEB have now been released.
