The Federal Council wants to work with the cantons to develop a strategy and an action plan against racism and anti-Semitism. It will also examine whether a new commissioner for combating racism and anti-Semitism should be appointed.

The Federal Council is proposing the adoption of a motion with these demands without comment, as was announced on Thursday. The majority of the National Council's Political Institutions Committee (SPK-N) is in favor of a strategy and an action plan against racism and anti-Semitism. An SVP minority rejects the proposal. Next up is the National Council.

If the matter is referred to the Federal Council by both chambers, the motion states that the Federal Council must strengthen the existing specialist office for combating racism "with sufficient resources". In the fight against racism and anti-Semitism, the Confederation, cantons and municipalities should therefore be held accountable in accordance with their respective tasks and responsibilities.

One of the reasons given for the motion is the increase in incidents of anti-Semitism in Switzerland since the Hamas attacks in Israel and the war in the Middle East. Racism in any form must have no place in a social and democratic society, writes the SPK-N.
