Culture Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider will open the Locarno Film Festival for the first time this Wednesday evening. The 77th edition of the festival is also the first under the aegis of the new President Maya Hoffmann.

The Italian-French historical film "Le Déluge" kicks off the 77th Locarno Film Festival on the Piazza Grande. The film by Italian director Gianluca Jodice ("The Bad Poet") shows Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI at the end of their reign.

The two leading actors Mélanie Laurent ("Inglourious Basterds") and Guillaume Canet ("Asterix & Obelix in the Middle Kingdom") will receive the festival's honorary prize, the Excellence Award Davide Campari, at the opening gala.

Until August 17, a total of 225 feature films, documentaries, experimental films and short films will be shown in the city on Lake Maggiore, including 41 Swiss-produced or co-produced films.
