SP Federal Councillor Beat Jans called for solidarity at the May Day celebrations on Bern's Bundesplatz. "Things are better together," emphasized Jans, referring to the numerous challenges in politics, the economy and society.

These include lower health insurance premiums and higher wages. Switzerland needs strong relations with Europe, especially when it comes to wage protection.

The ruling of the European Court of Human Rights on the climate seniors also shows that things are better together. He did not want to "spoil the critics' hash browns", said Jans, but the ruling was not a decision against the Swiss people, but one for them. It strengthens their rights.

Together, pensioners also helped the 13th AHV pension achieve a breakthrough, said Jans. "It's better together": this is precisely the motto that will be celebrated on May 1.

Solidarity is needed because the world is in a bad way. "Crises, climate, disasters, wars. In Ukraine and the Middle East. People despair, suffer, die. Thousands. Every day. It's almost unbearable."

The world is on fire and people in Switzerland are doing well. It is dangerous to believe that there is no fire just because your own house is not on fire, warned the Minister of Justice.

The slogan "It's better together" is actually an understatement in times like these. Rather, it should read: "Only together can we do it". Global problems can only be solved together. "Let's tackle it! Together," Jans concluded his speech.

Not all participants on the Bundesplatz were in agreement with Jans. There were individual whistles and heckling. Jans invited the mostly young critics to discuss with him. "I don't understand the language of whistles very well," he said.

Hundreds of people had previously marched through the city to the Bundesplatz in the trade union procession. Banners demanded: "Premiums down, wages up".
