The Swiss Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis addressed the 1st August-Wanderung of the "Schweizer Illustrierten" on the Gotthard, stressing that Switzerland should not rest on its laurels. He praised the country as the oldest and most stable democracy in Europe, and highlighted the impressive achievement of creating the constitution in just 51 days in 1848. He reminded the audience that freedom comes with responsibility, and that the Swiss economy is competitive and innovative, with low unemployment and inflation, and high trust in public institutions. However, Cassis warned that nothing is permanent and that the world is unpredictable, citing the current pandemic and the return of war to Europe as examples. He urged for more calm and reflection, especially in the election year when emotions can run high. In conclusion, he reminded the audience that the Swiss should be proud of their achievements, but should not become complacent and must continue to strive for progress.
