Anyone who wants to be vaccinated against Covid-19 can continue to do so free of charge. The federal government will cover the costs of the vaccination until mid-2024, as decided by the Federal Council on Wednesday. Vaccinations in pharmacies are excluded.
The regulations for covering the costs of the Covid-19 vaccination will remain in place until the end of 2023. In order to keep access to the vaccination low-threshold, the Federal Council has extended the measure, according to a statement. The costs will be covered by compulsory health insurance, the federal government and the cantons.
The vaccination against Covid-19 still offers good protection against serious illness, hospitalization and death, the Federal Council wrote. It remains a key element in preventing severe disease progression for particularly vulnerable people.
According to the Federal Council, the vaccination services offered by GP surgeries, hospitals and vaccination centers are sufficient to ensure that particularly vulnerable people can be vaccinated. For this reason, the federal government will no longer cover the costs of vaccinations in pharmacies from the beginning of 2024.
From mid-2024, the Federal Council assumes that the free market will be able to meet demand. From this point onwards, the federal government will no longer cover the costs of vaccination.
