Fire Departments Prepare for Forest Fires

Wildfires are increasingly threatening northern cantons in Switzerland, in addition to the traditional wildfire cantons of Valais, Ticino and Graubünden. The fire brigades have been equipped accordingly and the Fire Coordination Switzerland is working on a handbook. The cantons of Valais, Graubünden and Ticino already have concepts for fighting forest fires and the fire brigades are specially trained and equipped. In the other parts of the country, the fire brigades are also sensitized. In Central Switzerland, experts are currently working on a cross-cantonal forest fire concept. In 2022, the fire brigades jointly acquired material and took up training. Throughout the country and in Liechtenstein, there are concepts for forest and vegetation fires or they are being developed. The cantons and Liechtenstein also take care of the procurement of materials. The Fire Coordination Switzerland is also recording forest fires in its own chapter in a handbook. It sets out the processes and tactics for deployment, taking into account experiences from Switzerland and abroad. Without forestry services, private helicopter companies, civil protection and, if necessary, the army, the fire brigades cannot fight forest fires. These operations require a high degree of coordination.
