Fire Destroys Chalet in Lower Valais

On Wednesday evening, a chalet in the Unterwalliser holiday resort of Les Mayens-de-Chamoson was completely destroyed by a fire. A 79-year-old Belgian woman, the occupant of the house, suffered injuries in the blaze. Despite the quick response of the fire brigades from the villages of Chamoson and Les Deux-Rives, they were unable to save the chalet. The cause of the fire is still unknown and an investigation has been launched. The Wallis police have once again highlighted the high risk of fire in the canton due to the lack of rain and strong winds that have been drying out the ground. As a result, a general ban on outdoor fires has been imposed in Wallis since Thursday. Firefighters and helicopters have been battling a large-scale forest fire in Bitsch, Oberwallis, since Monday evening.
