The Swiss Milk Producers Association (SMP) has announced that Switzerland will import more cheese than it exports for the first time this year. This is the result of the strong liberalisation of the dairy sector in the 1990s, according to SMP President Boris Beuret. Consumers and processors now understand that production must be profitable in the long term. Dairy farms are shrinking twice as fast as other agricultural businesses. If nothing is done, Switzerland will have to import milk, which is absurd given that 80% of the country's agricultural land is green. The Gruyère (IPG) organisation reported declining exports at the end of June, and production had to be reduced by 10% for the whole of 2023. However, 2021 was also a record year for sales abroad, according to IPG Director Philippe Bardet.
