The continuous rain on the northern slopes of the Alps largely came to an end on Wednesday morning. After the heavy rainfall of the past 72 hours, the flood situation in the rivers calmed down.
Many water levels reached their maximum levels during the night and have since "dropped significantly", writes the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) in its Natural Hazards Bulletin. The highest danger level has been lifted in all affected bodies of water.
Only for the Arve near Geneva, the Aare before it flows into Lake Biel, the Rhine from the mouth of the Aare to Basel and Lakes Biel and Thun did the risk remain at level 3 "considerable" at midday.
However, the water level of the Arve will continue to fall during the course of the day and will no longer pose a danger by Thursday night. The discharge of the Saane will also continue to decrease rapidly. The warnings for the Aare downstream of Lakes Thun and Biel will probably remain in place. The High Rhine is expected to be downgraded on Thursday.
Due to the high inflows, water levels are still expected to rise on the large lakes on Wednesday For Lake Lucerne and Lake Geneva, a moderate flood risk of level 2 still applies.
