Daniel Spoerri became famous for his paintings of leftover food with dirty cutlery and dishes. He died in Vienna on Wednesday at the age of 94, the managing director of the Spoerri exhibition house in Austria confirmed to the German Press Agency.

Daniel Spoerri stuck leftovers from meals on tables and made works of art that could be eaten by his guests: He was the founder of "Eat Art".

Together with the artist couple Jean Tinguely and Niki de Saint Phalle and others, he signed the "Manifesto of New Realism" in 1960. It was primarily object artists who used trivial objects and wanted to question concepts such as "art" and "artwork".

Spoerri was born in Romania in 1930. His family fled from the Nazis to Zurich in 1942. He turned to fine art in the 1950s.

Spoerri moved to Austria in 2008. In Hadersdorf am Kamp in Lower Austria, he opened the Spoerri exhibition house and an associated restaurant in 2009.
