The forest fire between Mugena and Vezio in Ticino was brought under control early Saturday afternoon. The fire broke out on Friday evening and covered 32 hectares. The cause of the fire was still unknown on Saturday.

The fire spread quickly due to the persistent drought and the wind. Around 30 firefighters from the neighboring village of Novaggio and from Lugano were on site. Four helicopters were also deployed to fight the fire.

An on-call service remained on duty throughout the night, as Renato Pizolli, media spokesman for the Ticino police, told the Keystone-SDA news agency. There was no danger to the surrounding residential buildings.

According to the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (MeteoSwiss), the winter months on the southern side of the Alps have little precipitation, which is why forest fires are not uncommon in the second half of the season.

The fire, which devastated the forest above the villages of Mugena and Vezio, stretched over a length of 800 meters and a width of 400 meters. The cantonal police and the forester were also on site to assess the damage.
