Former Federal Councillor Alain Berset arrives in Kiev

Former Federal Councillor Alain Berset arrived in Kiev on Tuesday shortly before the second anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Swiss embassy reported on X that the focus of the trip was the role of the Council of Europe in supporting Ukraine.
Berset is running for the post of Secretary General of the Council of Europe. The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) supports this candidacy.
According to the Swiss embassy in Kiev, the Fribourg native will meet with the Council of Europe office in Ukraine, representatives of the Ukrainian parliament and other interest groups in the country to present his candidacy for the post of Secretary General of the Council of Europe.
At the end of November, Berset traveled to Kiev on one of his last trips abroad as President of the Swiss Confederation. He met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi and promised "long-term" support for the war-torn country.
